The Zoo

土曜日、天気が良かったので、オマハ動物園に行ってきました。オマハ動物園は去年の１月にも行ったんだけど、その時は、雪は積もってるし、外はマイナス気温だし、寒くて外に動物はいないし、、、でも今回は暖かくて沢山動物が見れました。
約３時間ぐらい園内を歩いたんだけど、いい運動になったっけ。

Yesterday, the beautiful weather prompted us to head for Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo. The last time we went, was January 2008. The weather was so frigid, we just stayed near the indoor areas. We were finally able to see the outdoor areas this time. Three hours later, we headed home as Takako was tired and needed to lay down.

Beginning of April, already?!?

週末、天気が良かったら動物園に行こうと思ってたんだけど、土曜日、日曜日と天気が悪く、日曜日は朝から雪が降りました。もう４月なのに雪が降るなんて。でも積もる程の雪じゃなかったけど、何より久々に動物園行きたかった。
東京は、桜の花が開花ということで、母親が桜の写真送ってくれました。綺麗だよね。お花見したいなって思っちゃいました。
デービスとクロは、キャベツを食べてご満悦な様子でした。

We thought, if it was a good weekend, we may have headed to the Henry Doorly Zoo. Well, the weather didn't cooperate. Saturday was cold and Sunday was worse. It started out with a dusting of snow until about noon then just cold & rainy the rest of the day. What a way to welcome April in. In Tokyo, Hideko has been taking photos of the cherry blossoms. She sent us some pictures as we miss the Spring time in Tokyo. Day-bis & Kuro had a great weekend, lounging on Dad's lap and eating cabbage that Mom gave them.

Ready for the Baby

最近、クロは自分の部屋からぬいぐるみのガールフレンド、フロッピーを外に連れ出す事が多くて、そんなに気にいっているならと、背中に乗せてみました。
私の出産も一ヶ月をきり、やっと編みかけてたおくるみが完成。本当はお花のステッチをつけなきゃ完成とはいえないんだけどね。でもなんとか出産前に編み物が終わって一安心。
日曜日は天気が良かったので、デービスとクロを連れてベースに散歩しに行ってきました。風がちょっと冷たかったけどいい運動になりました。

Here we are, at the end of March, within one month of the birth of our first baby. Last week, Kuro wanted to show us how proud he was of his girlfriend, Floppy. Takako finished knitting a yellow blanket, Day-bis & Kuro helped Dad get the baby's room in order. Skyped with Jared, Mary Grace & Shepard earlier this afternoon. Another lovely day here in Nebraska, some may have said that it is too cold (60°F). We went for a walk around the Parade Grounds on base, stopped at Panera for some bagels and returned home to wash the vehicles. Now just relaxing, once again, at home with Day-bis & Kuro sleeping in their beds.

First haircuts

今日、デービスとクロの毛を剃りました。夏前に一旦綺麗にしようと思ってね。でもデービスもクロも毛が長くて剃るのが大変でした。本当はもっと全身剃りたかったけど、背中の毛を剃るだけで精一杯、あまり毛を剃る事に時間かけちゃうとデービスとクロにも負担とストレスがかかっちゃうから、背中の毛を剃って終了。かなりガタガタになっちゃったけど、４週間から６週間で毛が生えると言う事なので、しばらくの辛抱、でも洋服着せちゃうからあまり剃った事、分からないんだけどね。

Today when Josh got off work, Day-bis & Kuro got their first haircuts. We wanted to shave them all but since their hair was thick, we just shaved their lower backs. We also felt they were getting stressed out since just their backs took about 30 minutes as Josh was holding them, Takako shaving. It should grow back in about 4-6 weeks. Maybe for their second haircuts we will go all the way. We put their sweatshirts on so it doesn't even look like they had their haircut.

Chris, Jill & Bo's visit

先週の木曜日の夜中にジョシュの妹夫婦＋犬がミネソタから遊びにきました。私のお腹を見たいと言う事で。妹夫婦が飼ってる犬はジャーマンシェパード、名前はボー、生後６ヶ月。６ヶ月に見えない大きさなんだけどね。デービスは、ボーにビビりまくり、腰はひけるわ、顔はひきつるわ、自分からボーに近づいて行かないのよね。クロはたまにボーに向かって行くんだけどやはり怖いらしくて、でも時間がたつにつれて犬同士、慣れてきてたっけ。とにかくボーは可愛い。
金曜日は家でリラックス。ランチは日本人の奥さん２人が（お子さんも）チャイナバッフェに行くと言う事で、私達も妹夫婦連れてそこでランチしました。楽しい時間過ごせました。
土曜日は、天気が良かったので、ダウンタウンにある公園に犬連れて行ってきました。本当に天気がよくて、犬達はきっと暑かったと思うけどね、お日様に沢山あたったので、私達も犬達も夜はぐっすり眠れたっけ。
日曜日の朝、妹夫婦＋犬はミネソタに帰りました。とても楽しい週末を過ごせました。

Last Thursday evening/Friday morning Chris, Jill & Bo travelled to Bellevue to visit us prior to the baby's birth. It was also a meeting of the cousins, Bo meeting Day-bis & Kuro. Bo is their, just a little over 6 months old, German Shepherd. Quite different from our Pugs. For the most part, they got along just fine. It just took some 'getting-used-to'. Day-bis would put on his 'I'm invisible face' and Kuro would act tough sometimes, but at others hide by Josh or Takako. Friday we ended up relaxing at the house, watching quality TV programming (Dog Whisperer), acquainting the dogs and ended up having cold ramen & spring rolls for dinner. Wonderful. Saturday morning, we woke up, ate some bagels, fresh fruit, coddled eggs & cold cereal then headed north towards downtown Omaha. It was such wonderful weather, we needed to bring the dogs for a walk around the Heartland of America park. It was a perfect day to be outside. Headed back home to get ready for Bibimba later that night. This morning they packed up the vehicle after a breakfast of waffles, fresh fruit & cold cereal. We have been relaxing since we saw them off. They arrived home safe & sound. We enjoyed their company.

Wes & Vicky's Bellevue visit

先週の木曜日にジョシュのご両親がミネソタから遊びにきました。私の出産前に私の妊娠姿をみたいと言う事とお腹を触りたいと言う事で。
デービスとクロを連れてベースに散歩に行ったり、ダウンタウンオマハに行ったり、家でリラックスしたりしました。
最初の２日間はとてもいい天気で半袖でも大丈夫だったけど、後半の２日間はとても寒くて、温度差の激しい４日間でした。
あっと言う間の４日間でしたが、とても楽しい時間を過ごせました。
今年の６月後半に今度は私達がミネソタに行く予定です。

This past Thursday, Wes & Vicky came down to visit us. The last time we met was last July. They wanted to see Takako pregnant before she gives birth next month. Takako was able to have them feel our baby kicking/punching/moving. We went on base, walked Day-bis & Kuro around the parade grounds, took a stroll downtown Omaha's Old Market, and relaxed at home. We ate everything from bibimba, mabodofu, Japanese curry-rice, curry & naan. (Just to name a few of the dishes.) During the first two days, the weather was great as Thursday = 73°F & Friday = 59°F. Then it went down to near freezing (32°F) for the last days. We all had a great time visiting, relaxing, enjoying the company. We will see them again in June!

Happy 2nd Birthday Kuro!

今日はクロの２歳のお誕生日。クロはしっかりしてるからまだ２歳かって感じだけど。去年のお誕生日にガールフレンド（ぬいぐるみ）をあげたんだけど、数日でそのガールフレンドの目はなくなり、耳もかじられ、無惨な結果になりました。で、今年はどうしようとジョシュと相談したんだけどやはりガールフレンドが欲しいだろうと思って、お誕生日プレゼントはガールフレンドにしました。名前はフロッピー。
フロッピーとは長い間、つきあってくれるといいんだけど。クロ、お誕生日おめでとう！

Kuro's 2nd birthday, already?! We can't believe that he is already 2! He has been such a good boy this past year. For his 1st birthday, we bought him a spider monkey girlfriend named "Spicy". Within about a week, her eyes were gone and he was starting on her ears. We sure hope he treats his new puppy girlfriend with respect. Her name is "Floppy"! Day-bis is sure proud of his brother getting older.

Surprise Baby Shower

今日、奥さん達にベビーシャワーをやっていただきました。ベビーシャワーとは「出産前祝 パーティ」の事で、日本では、赤ちゃんが誕生してから贈り物などを送るけど、アメリカでは、まだ生まれてないうち(約出産2ヶ月前頃)に 友人や家族などと一緒にお祝いをする習慣があるのね。生まれてからだと 色々 大変って事で。でも全くベビーシャワーだと気がつかず、今日は２月生まれのお誕生日会と聞いていたので、てっきりお誕生日会だと思って行ったら「お誕生日会とベビーシャワー」でした。
で、ベビーシャワーと一緒にゲームもしたのね。
まずは「お腹周り当てクイズ」皆が私のお腹周りを当てるってクイズ。お腹周りはどれくらいかトイレットペーパーを使って当てるのね（私のお腹周りはこのくらいかな？って思う長さにトイレットペーパーを切って一番近かった人の勝ちってゲーム）
次は「「赤ちゃんの顔」ペンと白い無地の紙皿を頭の上に紙皿を乗せた状態で、私の指示通りに赤ちゃんの顔を描いてもらうゲーム。見てて難しそうだったっけ。で、私が思う赤ちゃんの顔を書いた人の勝ちってゲーム。
最後は「ベビーフード当てクイズ」瓶詰めのベビーフード５種類あって既にラベルは剥がしてあるのね、それを私が食べて当てるってゲームなんだけど、かなり難しくて、額には汗が。
今日のベビーシャワーはサプライズで、本当に驚きました。そして奥さん達におむつや、おもちゃ、ブランケットや洋服、その他色々頂き、本当にありがとうございました。

Today, Takako met with seven other Japanese wives for a potluck. She didn't realize it was going to be a February birthday party for the members and...a surprise baby shower. In Japan, 'baby showers' happen after the baby is born, then gifts are given. They played a couple of games after the potluck. First, a tummy-size check where they each would go around with a roll of toilet paper thinking how many 'squares' Takako's belly is. Next was to draw the baby's portrait on a paper plate while it is on each of their heads. Takako got to choose the winning drawing. Lastly, Takako needed to try five different types of baby food and guess the flavors. No labels, just taste...if she gets the wrong answer, she needs to keep eating until she guesses correctly. (Tough game!) She did receive many gifts from the wives. To name a few, baby wipes, diapers, blankets, toys & clothes. She had a great time and was very surprised.

Once again, a relaxing weekend

週末は特に変わった事もなく土曜日は、お昼過ぎからお買い物。新しい運動靴を買ってもらいました。運動靴持っているんだけど紐靴で毎回、紐を結ぶのがめんどくさくというかお腹が大きくなり始めてるので、しゃがむのにも一苦労で、で、紐靴じゃない運動靴を買ってもらいました。デービスとクロにはお菓子を買いました。
日曜日は天気が良かったものの、風が冷たくて、でもデービスもクロ、ジョシュもお散歩に行きたそうだし、私も散歩しないと体に良くないので、ベースに散歩しに行ってきました。でも寒かった。
今週の火曜日に近所の家族が、ニューヨークに引っ越しをするのね、昨日、奥さんが挨拶にきてくれたんだけど、やはり別れは辛いね。私が、大泣きしたのは言うまでもなく。。。。。

Recently we have been spending our time relaxing around the house with the little boys. Takako, Day-bis & Kuro may take a nap while Josh plays video games. Yesterday we did a little shopping for some things we needed/wanted around the house. Since Takako is almost 32 weeks along, she has noticed that bending over to tie her shoes has become cumbersome. Josh bought some slip-on shoes for her. Today we walked the little boys around the parade grounds on base and to get some exercise. It was about 34°F, a bit on the chilly side. Back in the neighborhood, our next door neighbors will be leaving this week for New York. He retired from the Air Force just this month and his wife has been a wonderful friend for Takako to chat with about vegetables and crafts. Takako will miss her.

Happy Valentines Day

久々に金曜日の朝、雪が沢山降って、多分１５、６センチ位、積もったのかな。デービスもクロも外で走り回ったりして楽しそうに過ごしてました。クロは相変わらず雪を食べてたけどね。
土曜日はバレンタインって事で、家の近くにできた「テキサスロードハウス」ってお店にお昼ご飯を食べに行ってきました。メインが出てくる前にスープやパンなど食べちゃったから既にお腹が一杯だったけど、ステーキ美味しかった。
で、バレンタインって事で、久々にバレンタインチョコを作りましたっても簡単なチョコフレーク。後、前々からジョシュが欲しがってたギネスのコップも一緒にプレゼントしました。デービスとクロにはお友達から教わった犬用のクッキー、しかも特大版を作ってあげました。ちょっと薄焼きおせんべいというかナンみたいになっちゃったけどデービスもクロも喜んで、ムシャムシャ、バリバリ食べてました。
で、私の出産まで後１０週間ちょっととなりました。お腹の赤ちゃんが、男の子か女の子か聞いてないのでというより、ジョシュが「性別はきかない」と言うので仕方なく聞くわけにもいかず、私は聞きたかったけどね。だって赤ちゃんの洋服、黄色とか白色とか無難な色しか買えないんだもの。でもって去年の１２月から赤ちゃんのおくるみも編んでいるんだけど、まだ半分しかできてなくて、急いで仕上げないと。でもこのおくるみも黄色の毛糸で編んでいるんだよね。どんだけ黄色が好きなの？って感じだけど、でもジョシュは黄色が好きなのよね。日本にいる時、黄色のスカイラインに乗ってたものね。初め見た時、ヒヨコカーかと思ったっけ。

Yesterday we had about 8-10" of snow here in Bellevue. We were shocked since the weather has been wonderful. Day-bis & Kuro enjoyed the snow, Kuro ate it right off of Dad's shovel. Today, to celebrate Valentine's Day, we ate lunch at Texas Roadhouse. We were already full by the time the steak arrived. It was delicious. Takako made Valentine snacks with Frosted Flakes covered in chocolate. She also gave me a set of 4 Guinness pint glasses. She also made cookie/treats for Day-bis & Kuro, the large kind. If you didn't already know by now, Takako is due in less than 10 weeks. We don't want to know ahead of time whether it's a boy or girl, we just care that he/she is healthy. We do have lots of yellow and green clothes/onesies. As you read in the previous post, Shepard RIley is doing well. Takako has been knitting a yellow blanket for our baby since December. Hopefully she can get it finished by the due date. Come to think of it, Josh likes the color yellow. As you may recall, he had a yellow Nissan Skyline in Japan. Takako remembers it being about the same color as a baby chicken.

Happy Birthday, Shepard Riley Daugherty

This past Wednesday, at 6:53 PM (CST) my brother, Jared & his wife, Mary Grace welcomed Shepard Riley into the world. He weighed in at 6 lbs. 2 oz, 19.6 inches long as he was about 5 weeks early. Mom, Dad & baby are doing great! Many beautiful pictures so far, many more memories to come! Happy Birthday!

２月１１日にジョシュの弟夫婦に２７７８グラムの男の子が誕生しました。出産予定日は３月２４日だったんだけど、５週早めに産まれました。母子ともに健康です。名前は「シェパード•ライリィ•ドォールティ」お誕生日おめでとう、シェパード！！！

February in Nebraska?

土曜日は暖かくて気持ちがいい日でした。天気が良かったので、デービスとクロを連れてお散歩。ジョシュはドッグランに行きたかったみたいだけど、私はベースの中の散歩コースに行きたかったので、ベースの中へ。ベースの中の散歩コースは一周２０〜３０分くらいで終了しちゃうけど、それでもいい運動になりました。
デービスとクロに犬用の歯ブラシと歯磨き粉を買ったのね。で早速試したんだけど、デービスは何故か泡だらけになっちゃって、写真撮りながら笑ってしまった。

Yesterday, Josh wanted to bring the boys to the dog park but instead we went on base, walked around the parade grounds. It was great weather (60°F), we can't believe it is only February! It took us about 20-30 minutes to walk around but it was exercise for us and the boys. We bought a toothbrush and toothpaste for brushing Day-bis & Kuro's teeth. Day-bis doesn't like the taste as he was spitting up bubbles, Takako could hardly take the photo because she was laughing so hard. Kuro loved the mint flavor and was begging for more. Just a couple more months and it is Spring.

Chinese Cuisine & Super Bowl Sunday

近所に出来た「ベイジン東京」ってお店に奥さん２人とランチしに行ってきました。ベイジン東京は、中華と日本食のお店なんだけど、日本食って事で気になってたんだよね。で、早速行ってきました。日本食が気になってたんだけど、結局、頼んだ料理は中華、味は普通かな。お店の雰囲気、良かったよ。で、帰り際にトイレに行ったんだけど、驚いたよ、だってものすごいピンクの照明だったの。
先日、母親から荷物が届きました、その中にデービスと黒へのおもちゃも入ってました。ボール型のおもちゃなんだけど、中にお菓子を入れて、転がして取り出すってやつなのね。デービスは始めは、かじってばかりだったけど、後半は転がして中のお菓子を出してました。
今日は年に一回のスーパーボウル（アメリカンフットボール）の日なんだよね。おかげで今日は日本のテレビは見れないわ、大河ドラマが。。。

This past week, Takako met up with a couple other Japanese wives at a new restaurant near us named, Beijing Tokyo. It serves both Chinese & Japanese Cuisine. She ate a Chinese dish, rice topped with a beef & garlic sauce. She also had wonton soup. Day-bis & Kuro relaxed at home, watched a little TV & played with new toys from grandma Hideko. You may be wondering why the pictures on top are so light, you may have not have been able to see Kuro. (The toy balls can open up, you can put small treats inside and watch Day-bis & Kuro spin them across the floor until the treats fall out.) Today is also Super Bowl Sunday. It starts in about an hour. The Vikings are not in it this year but, go NFC!

It snowed again!

先週、久々に奥様達とランチしに行ってきました。メキシコ料理屋さんなんだけどメキシコ料理美味しいね。で、そこで私ともう一人の奥さんのお誕生日を祝ってくれました。突然、大きな帽子をかぶらされた時は少々驚きましたが嬉しかったです、ありがとうございました。しかもまたあまったケーキまで持たせてくれて、ジョシュも喜んで食べてました。ごちそうさまでした。
週末になったらいきなり寒くなって、今朝、雪が結構積もってたっけ。デービスもクロも散歩の途中、足がやはり冷たいらしく片足あげては休んで、で、また歩いて....を繰り返してました。早く春、こないかなぁ。
トイザラスで、デービスとクロの洋服を買いました。８５％オフだったよ。写真撮ったら、デービスとクロ、同じポーズしてた。

It has been a while since Takako has met with the other Japanese wives for lunch. It ended up being a belated, surprise lunch at La Mesa for Takako & Megumi. She sure was surprised as she wore a sombrero as the employees sang ♪Happy Birthday♪ to her. She enjoyed the lunch and even brought some birthday cake back for Josh, to finish. This past weekend has been cold. It started snowing Friday afternoon and didn't stop until early this morning. We took our little boys on a walk in the 'fresh' snow. Their little paws started irritating them because of the cold but they kept on going. We can't wait for spring! Also this weekend, Day-bis & Kuro received new, clearance rack outfits from Toys"R"Us. Only about $1.70 each.

Yes, We Can!

土曜、日曜日はデービスとクロ連れて１時間近く散歩に行ってきました。歩くのって結構疲れるよね。久々に２日連続で長距離歩いたから月曜日起きたら、膝が痛くて、でも今日も歩かなきゃって思い今日は長距離の散歩じゃなくて２０分くらい散歩して帰ってきました。流石に疲れていたらしく散歩から帰ってきたらデービスとクロ、ついでに私もお昼寝しちゃいました。
週末、母親からお誕生日プレゼントが届きました。食べ物や洋服が入ってたんだけど、毎回、どうもありがとうね。今回は、デービスとクロの洋服も入ってたっけ。洋服似合ってたっけ。
でもって明日、オバマ新大統領が誕生しますわ。何より、景気がよくなるといいけど、米軍のイラク撤退は開始するみたいだけど、そのかわり今度はアフガニスタンへ米軍はいかなきゃいけないんだものね。情勢がよくないとはいえ、うーん。早く世界が平和になるといいけど。

Saturday & Sunday we took Day-bis & Kuro for a one-hour walk. After the walks, they were so tired they laid around the house (mainly on Dad's lap) the rest of the day. This morning Takako woke up, stated that her knees felt sore. Today we went for just a 20 minute walk as then Takako joined our little boys with being too tired. We lounged around the house again. Also, this past weekend Hideko sent Takako's Birthday gift and many other items from Japan, including new outfits for Day-bis & Kuro. They look good! Tomorrow, President-elect Obama will be inaugurated as the 44th President of the US. One of the big issues is the withdrawal of troops from Iraq. (Supposedly move them to Afghanistan.) Imagine what the world would be like with Peace.

Takako's 33!

先日、３３歳の誕生日迎えました。２３歳の間違えであって欲しいと思う今日この頃ですが、誕生日だからといって特に出かける事もなく普通に家で過ごしました。頑張って誕生日ケーキを作ったんだけど、いまいちスポンジがうまく出来ず、しかもホイップクリームも足らず、中途半端な誕生日ケーキになっちゃった。ことごとく料理のセンスがないなって改めて思う日でもありました。ジョシュから「欲しいものある？」って聞かれたんだけど今は欲しいものより、食べたいものが多いんだよね。とんかつに焼き肉に、お寿司に、「あぁ日本に行きたい」と改めて思っちゃいました。ついでに温泉にも行きたい。それにしても最近、寒い。マイナス２０度とかの日もあるんだよね。
今日、久々にオマハのパグミーティングに行ってきました。今回はパグの数、多かったっけ。４０頭かな。デービスはいつものごとく他のパグと遊ぶ事なく一人でおもちゃで遊んだり、他の飼い主さんの所に行ったりと。クロは、他のパグと走り回ったりしてたっけ。
今回、パグミーティングの開催場所は最近新しくオープンした犬専用のデイケアやシャンプーしてくれるお店。最近、オープンしたお店だけあって綺麗だった。

This past Tuesday, Takako turned the big 33! She kind of wished that it was 23 instead. We celebrated at home with Day-bis & Kuro. Takako sought out to create her birthday cake even though Josh suggested we get one from the commissary on base. (She thinks they are WAY too SWEET and have WEIRD colors.) She started off by making sponge cake and layering it. It turned out like a work of art! It was delicious. We enjoyed celebrating with her. The weather has dipped even more the wrong way. Yesterday & today it was a high of about 5°F (-15°C). With the windchill, it feels like -15° (-26°C). Not quite the weather that we want right now. Tonight we attended the January 2009 Omaha Pug Club Meet-up. There were about 40 Pugs there. The venue was great as it just opened, Dogtopia. Day-bis was either off in the corner, trying to be invisible or nudging other Pug-parents to hold him. Kuro started off with chasing other Pugs, then settled down into a calm exploratory state. Day-bis & Kuro enjoyed their playtime. We hope to go there again.

Relaxing @ Home

最近、雪降らないなって思ったら、先週の金曜日の夜、久々に雪が降りました。夜の散歩、寒かった。でもデービスもクロも雪の中、楽しそうに走り回ってたよ。翌日は凄い天気がよかったよ。
最近、寒くて外にでるのもおっくうでね、でも体、動かさないといけない！と思い、今日、ジョシュとデービスとクロと一緒に家の周りを４５分間位、散歩しました。かなり疲れたけど、でもいい運動になりました。
そーいえば、大相撲一月場所が始まったね。久々に朝青龍の取り組み見たけど、何度みても気分のいい取り組みじゃなかった。相手のお相撲さん、土俵から出てるのに、張り手してるし。しかも朝青龍のあのカメラ目線やめてほしいものだわ。

Well, it snowed Friday night. It seems like it has been a long while. With the temperature dipping, the night-walks are getting more and more frigid & short. Day-bis & Kuro have fun in short bursts. Their feet get cold! This afternoon we went out for a walk. The four of us took a stroll around the neighborhood that lasted about 45 minutes. Upon arriving home, we laid down to nap. We were tired. Takako thought it was the perfect time to take pictures of Day-bis & Kuro. While watching the most recent TV Japan via Dish Network, we noticed that the next Japanese Sumo tournament has started. We saw the cocky antics of Asashōryū. Not very sportsmanlike.

New Year's Day

あけましておめでとうございます。今年も宜しくお願い致します。
さて毎年恒例の初日の出を見に行ってきました。とにかく寒かったけど去年みたく雪が積もってないだけましなんだけどね。
でもデービスは寒くて小刻みに震えていたっけ。
朝ご飯は、ジョシュは昨日の残りのポテトチャウダー、私はお雑煮と煮物、なますなどを食べました。

Happy New Year! This morning, 6:45 AM to be exact, our alarm went off. Our family tradition is to take a family photo with the first sun of the new year! We journeyed out to the base lake, Takako drove with Day-bis & Kuro in the hatchback of the Nissan. By the time we arrived lakeside, the sky was painted with pink, yellow, orange, etc. We took some quick 'lighting-check' shots and still had about 15 minutes until sunrise at about 7:54 AM. At that time we were ready for the family to slide into view. Snapped a couple of shots and headed home for brunch. Josh had left over Potato Chowder as Takako had Zōni. It has been a great start to 2009!

New Year's Eve

今日は大晦日、日本はもう2009年だけどね、日本の皆さん、あけましておめでとうございます。さて、我が家は今日もまたポテトチャウダーを食べました、お芋は美味しいね。で、デービスとクロに今年最後のシャンプーをしました。デービスのアレルギーもだいぶよくなってきたっけ。でも当分の間、デービスには週２回シャンプーをする事になりました。パグ特有のアレルギーだから仕方ないけど、早く完治するといいな。犬といえば、昨日、映画見に行ってきました「Marley&Me」って映画なんだけど日本も、もうすぐ公開すると思うけど（日本では「マーリー　世界一おバカな犬が教えてくれたこと」っ映画名になるのかな、多分）とにかくいい映画でした。途中から涙が止まらなかったよ、ジョシュも泣いてたっけ。犬はやはり家族の一員だね。お勧めの映画です。はい。
で、大晦日の話に戻って、夕方、今年最後のお風呂に入った後は、年越しソバを食べました。今年は日本のチャンネルを入れているので（日本のチャンネルっても基本的にNHKしか入らないんだけど）紅白を見てるんだけど、全く分からない歌手が出てるわ。

Today, New Year's Eve, tomorrow the beginning of 2009. On the menu from today, Potato Chowder for lunch. In the afternoon, Day-bis & Kuro received baths at home. Day-bis is feeling better with the new shampoo. It will be tough in the coming weeks as he needs to be shampooed twice per week. Yesterday, we went out on a 'date night' to the movies. We saw the well-hyped (from the family), Marley & Me. The two of us had tears, welling up as we thought of our own adventures with Day-bis & Kuro. Wonderful movie. Tonight we had a traditional Japanese meal of hot soba noodles with vegetables. We are relaxing tonight at home, tuning in the TV Japan version of the year-end NHK Japanese Music Concert. As 2008 comes to a close, we think of our family & friends. We hope to enjoy your company in the coming year.

Christmas 2008

メリークリスマス！今年はジョシュの実家へは行かず、オマハで過ごしました。クリスマスイブは恒例のポテトチャウダーを食べました。美味しかったけどポテトはお腹にたまるよね。夕食を食べた後はプレゼントを開けました。デービスとクロには洋服を、私はワッフルを焼く機械と石の板（ピザとかクッキーを焼く時に使用するもの）、ジョシュはニコンの一眼レフカメラとスーパーマリオのパンツ。後、ジョシュのご両親からランチョマットとキャンドル、カレンダーとパグの形をした塩、胡椒の容器。同じ形で、ヘイダン君＆メメさんからもパグの形をした写真立て、後、ご近所のセラからはクッキーを頂きました。母親からは１０月頃から６箱も色々送ってもらいました。毎年、ジョシュの家族とクリスマスプレゼントの交換をするんだけど、今年はそれをやめて募金にしました。うちは、アメリカ中西部のパグ救出と動物愛護協会に募金しました。
翌日は、早速ワッフルを焼いて食べました。美味しかった。で、その後は、またプレゼントの開けました（今度は、ソックスに入っているプレゼント）ジョシュと私はチョコレートのお菓子、デービスとクロは犬用のお菓子を、デービスとクロ喜んでいたっけ。
ここ最近デービスとクロはアンテナをつけているんだけど、実はデービス、パグ特有のアレルギーが最近酷くて、お薬を塗るんだけどやはりかゆくてかいちゃうんだよね、で、それをふせぐために昼間はアンテナ、夜はアンテナを外して手足に靴下を履かしてなるべくかかないように防いでるんだよね。クロはアレルギーとかないんだけどクロもたまに顔をかいちゃうからアンテナつけてるんだよね。でもデービスもクロもアンテナ嫌がるかなって思ったけど進んでアンテナつけたがってるから良かった。

Merry Christmas! We have once again continued our family tradition of Potato Chowder for the Christmas Eve meal. Once the meal is complete, we need to finish washing all of the dishes prior to sitting down & passing out the presents from under the tree. Then we unwrap all of our presents. Day-bis & Kuro received clothes, Takako got a baking stone & waffle maker, Josh received a new dSLR camera (for the family) and Mario boxers. As a family, we received a 2009 Pug calendar, Pug salt & pepper shakers (from the same company that our Pug picture holders we received from Haydon & MeMe), place mats, Candy Cane scented candle & cookies. From Hideko, we have received too many boxes with goodies from Japan, year-round. Normally our family exchanges gifts but we decided to give to a couple of charities this year. We gave to the Nebraska Animal Humane Society & the Midwest Pug Rescue. Earlier this morning, we checked our stockings and ate waffles. Day-bis & Kuro each received a 1 lb. bag of mix-n-match treats from Petco as Takako & I received chocolate candy. Recently, we have been putting on Day-bis & Kuro's 'antennas' because Day-bis has an allergic reaction and we've been treating it. We need to make sure that he doesn't itch it. Kuro likes to itch his neck but is fine. He is very strong with no allergies. They have gotten used to their antenna's. (Just in case you were wondering why they have the recovery collars on.)

The Beginning of Winter

今週も寒かったっても毎日マイナス気温なんだけどね。先週の始めは、奥さん、お二人のお誕生日会に行ってきました。でも外は雪が積もってて、私の車は四輪駆動じゃないから雪道は滑ってしまうという事でと言うより、自分の車で雪道を走る練習してないから危ないという事で久々にジョシュの車ででかけました（ジョシュの車は四輪駆動）それにしても久々にジョシュの車、運転したけどバス運転しているみたいだった。週末、自分の車で雪道練習しようと思っていたけど、結局しなかった、あぁ、来週はしなくては。
お隣さん、１０月頃からセントバーナード犬を飼い始めたんだよね。でも、もう一頭、グレードデンっていう犬も飼っているんだけどさ。大型犬２頭って、凄いよね。ジョシュの弟夫婦もセントバーナードを飼ってて、デービス、弟夫婦の犬かと思って近づいていたっけ。
土曜日はベースの動物病院でサンタさんとの記念撮影ができるという事で行ってきました。デービスもクロもサンタにビビる事なく撮影できました。

This past week, the weather has been below or at least near 0°F (~17°C). Even though today is the first day of Winter, we have done many things while braving the cold, frigid air. With the snow from last week, Takako braved the winter driving. She had no prior experience with driving in the snow but did great with our AWD Toyota Highlander. Takako felt like she drove a bus to meet some friends to celebrate two birthday's at Lansky's. (Josh drove the Nissan Versa to work.) Our neighbors, the other side of the duplex, recently bought a St. Bernard. (They already have a black Great Dane.) Day-bis wanted to talk to the St. Bernard, probably because he looks like his cousin, Starbuck. The dog is very friendly and just wants to play. Also this weekend, we brought Day-bis & Kuro to the Vet Clinic on base to meet Santa. We are looking forward to Christmas later this week. Josh will be off work from then until the new year!

Our Downtown Omaha Date

土曜日の夜、先週行ったお店にジョシュと一緒に行ってきました。最初に前菜を一品頼んで、食べたんだけど結構ボリュームがあって、既にお腹が一杯、そこにサラダもきてサラダを食べ終わる頃にはもう満腹状態、まだメインの料理がきてないんだけど（私はピザで、ジョシュは鶏肉とエビの何か）結局、ピザの半分は食べきれず持ち帰りました。前菜とサラダでお腹一杯になるとはね、でも美味しかった、また行きたいな。食後はダウンダウンを少し散策、仮設のスケートリンク場があったっけ。

Just yesterday, Takako & I went out on a date to downtown Omaha, the Old Market district. We ate at the Upstream Brewing Company where she was just one week ago. We had ordered the Hot Artichoke & Asiago Cheese Dip as an appetizer then moved onto salads. Takako with a Caesar and Greek for me. Takako felt stuffed after the salad and realized that she also ordered the Blonde Pizza too. Josh finished off his meal with the Char-Grilled Chicken & Shrimp Dijon. We then headed out to walk around near the ConAgra sponsored Ice-skating Rink just down the block. The cool wind started to move in as we then headed for home, with half of the Blonde Pizza. What a lovely date.

先週の土曜日の夜は、数人の奥さん達と一緒に夕飯を食べに、オマハのダウンタウンまで行ってきました。１８時前にダウンタウンに着いたんだけど、駐車場もお店も凄く混んでてビックリ。でもお店は一人の奥さんが予約してくれてたので、すんなりと入れました。私は鮭の料理をオーダー。量が多かったけど、ペロリと食べてしまった。お店の雰囲気も凄く良かったっけ。食後は少しダウンタウンを歩いたんだけど、とにかく空気が冷たくて、温度計みたらマイナス６度とかだった、寒い。帰る途中、毎年この時期になるとクリスマスのイルミネーションが凄い家があるという事なのでそれを見に行ってきました。私は初めて見たんだけど、とにかく凄かった、でも綺麗だった。
お留守番のジョシュは、午後からピザを作ってたっけ、粉をこねて発酵させて、具をのせて焼いてました。次はジョシュと一緒に行ったお店に行こう。

Last night, Takako went out with some of the other Japanese wives to a place in downtown Omaha. My how busy downtown is prior to 6 PM. It was a good thing that they made reservations at the Upstream Brewing Company. Takako ordered the salmon dish in addition to a garlic bread appetizer. She was shocked as she was able to eat the entire meal and how delicious everything was! After dinner, they took a stroll around the Old Market, although it was about 21°F with the windchill. Just before heading home, they drove around some Bellevue & La Vista neighborhoods to see the Christmas lights. Takako just had to take some pictures. Josh had made some homemade pizza at home (with Takako's watchful eyes) prior to her heading out with the other women. He stayed back & entertained Day-bis & Kuro until Takako's return. It was another good night in Nebraska.

Thanksgiving 2008 & the First Snow

先週の木曜日はアメリカの祝日だったのね、感謝祭なんだけど七面鳥やマッシュポテト、アップルパイやパンプキンパイなどを食べる習慣があるんだけど、私は全く七面鳥に興味がなくてと言うより作る気もなくて、ジョシュも既に職場で感謝際のパーティがあってそこで色々食べたから家で食べなくてもいいって事で、普通にシチューとライスコロッケとチーズケーキを作って食べました。巨大なライスコロッケは少々、胃にもたれたけどね。翌日は、デパートや色々なお店が大セールなの、１年で１番安い日って言われているんだけど、その日だけお店の開店時間が朝の４、５時なのよね。開店と同時にお店に行ってみたかったけど、私達は普通に起床して、クリスマスプレゼント（私のね）を買いに行ってきました。クリスマスまで待たないと使えないってのが少々残念なんだけどね。
日曜日の朝、起きたら雪が降ってたんだよね。お昼前には溶けちゃったんだけど、デービスは去年同様、雪にビビりまくり、クロは凄い勢いで雪を食べてたっけ。
感謝祭が終わったので、クリスマスツリーを出しました。それにしてもデービスの襟巻き、凄い事になっているわ。

Next week will be the 1-year mark of our return to the states. With the 4-day weekend beginning with Thanksgiving, we wanted to just stay home & relax. For Thanksgiving this year, Takako didn't want to make a full turkey since it is just the two of us, so she decided on making a 'normal' meal. We had potato & carrot stew, rice croquette and baked cheesecake. Wonderful. (You should try it sometime.) The following day, known as Black Friday, is the 'busiest' shopping day of the year. It is the time when many stores open at about 4 or 5 AM to let the shopping begin. We went to Bed, Bath & Beyond to purchase some small items that Takako wanted for Christmas. She can't use/open them until Christmas Eve. This weekend we also put up our petite Christmas tree. Last night was the first snow of the season so we had to go outside with our little boys. Day-bis is still a little scared of snow but Kuro started back to where he left off, eating the snow. It ended up being a fairly warm day as the snow melted by about 2-3 PM. Either way, it was the first snow. Quite an enjoyable 4-day weekend.

More food and sleeping (and it's not Thanksgiving yet)

最近寒い日が続いていて、いつ雪が降るのだろうと毎日思っているんだけど、私達が住んでいる所はまだ雪が降らず、いつ降るのだろうか。
先日、家の近くに韓国料理屋さんが開店したので奥さん達とランチに行ってきました。とにかくサービスがよくて頼んでないおかずもお皿にのっけてくれたり、お店の人も感じがよくて、ご飯も美味しかったのよね。その時、メニューに石焼ビビンバを発見。それをみてからどーしても石焼ビビンバが食べたくて、金曜日にお家で作りました。石焼は私達が日本にいる時に母親が買ってくれたのでそれを使って、緑系の野菜を入れるのを忘れたから何か見た目がいまいちだったけど、でも美味しかった。体の中から温まったっけ。
で、この間、ロールケーキを作ったのね、でも巻き方がうまくなくてロールケーキとよべるものではなかったのよ、リベンジって事でまた作ったんだけど、というより私が作り方を教えてジョシュが作ったんだけど。スポンジを流しこむ型が大きすぎて今度はスポンジが薄くなっちゃって、スポンジの薄いロールケーキになっちゃったっけ。でもスポンジもクリームも美味しくできたので、次こそはスポンジの厚いロールケーキを作ろうっと。そーいえば最近、デービスとクロ、お昼寝する時いっつも二人寄り添って寝てる事が多いのよね。

It has been getting colder here, day after day. Every once in a while there is a warm day (50°F) like today. We are wondering when it will start to snow. Two weeks ago, Takako went to a new Korean restaurant near Olde Towne Bellevue with some other Japanese wives. She stated that it had great service and was delicious. As she looked at the menu, she thought to herself, "We can make Ishiyaki Bibimba at home." We have the bowls for it as Hideko bought them for us. This past Friday we had it for dinner. We didn't add any green veggies but they still came out exceptional. Takako also tried her hand at a roll cake recipe, however there wasn't enough cake to roll inside itself. Josh had also tried yesterday and it turned out a little bit better. We will be working to perfect it in the coming months. One more thing on this post, Day-bis & Kuro love sleeping close to each other.

Back in Nebraska

先週の土曜日、フロリダから無事にジョシュが帰ってきました。６週間とはいえ、本当に長く感じた６週間でした。ジョシュが帰ってくるなり私の体調もすっかり治ってしまいました。ジョシュは帰ってくるなり色々、家の事やら（私が体調が悪くてあまり掃除とか洗濯とか出来なくて）庭の落ち葉拾い、銀行に行ったり買い物に行ったりと忙しい毎日を過ごしてました。
週の始めに天気のいい日があったので、デービスとクロを連れてオマハの公園に散歩しに行きました。凄く広い公園で散歩の途中から私もデービスもクロもかなり疲れてしまったけど、いい運動になったっけ。
金曜日の昼間は来週イギリスに行ってしまう奥さんの送別会第２弾がありました。実は１０月の終わりに１１月、１２月にオマハを離れる奥さんの送別会があったんだけど、私は体調もよくなくジョシュも帰ってくると言う事で顔だけだして帰ってしまったんだけど、今年は本当に異動する人が多いなって思っちゃった。で、金曜日の送別会は張り切って揚げ出し豆腐を作っていったんだけど、作る量が少なくて、一人一切れの揚げ出し豆腐になっちゃったよ。次は大量に作らなきゃね。

Last Saturday, Josh returned home from his TDY in Florida. You should have seen the homecoming celebration that Takako, Day-bis & Kuro put on. You wouldn't believe how long 6 weeks really can feel! While Josh was gone, Takako felt lonely, although Day-bis & Kuro really tried to help her. All three of them were lonely...together. (If that makes any sense...) Josh took this past week off from work to spend quality time with the family. We went to the Heartland of America Park on Tuesday to go for a walk with the boys. It was a beautiful day...Day-bis ended up talking with the ducks...but since then it has been cold and windy. Winter is here. No snow yet, however. Just yesterday, Takako attended another going-away party for one of the Japanese spouses. They each brought their special dishes to share but Takako realized she should've made more. She even brought some of the deliciousness back for Josh to indulge in. DELICIOUS!

2 weeks left!

さて、ジョシュの研修も残すところあと２週間となりました。フロリダでは、日本レストランに行ったり日曜日はフットボールをみたりと楽しんでいる様子。でも、筆記試験があったりスピーチの試験があったりとやはり日々大変みたい。私はというと最近、少しずつ体調もよくなってきているけど、ジョシュがいない事で私もデービスもクロもかなりストレスがたまっているんだよね。ジョシュの仕事柄、出張が多いのはあたりまえだから慣れなきゃいけないんだけど全く慣れず、でも２週間後にはジョシュが帰ってくるので、今はそれを楽しみに毎日送ろうと思いますわ。


Josh only has 2 weeks left at NCOA. Just a little more push through until our graduation next Thursday. It has been enjoyable at times (eating sushi at Mori, a Japanese restaurant), but stressful at others (preparing for speeches & studying for tests.) One last weekend here in Florida. Takako has been doing a great job in Nebraska taking care of Day-bis & Kuro for the past month. It has been stressful for her too, being away from Josh. Soon, very soon, I will be home to enjoy time with Takako & our little boys.

Florida Sunset & Nebraska Life

さてジョシュがフロリダに行ってから半月ちょっとたちました。ジョシュは、クラスメイトと一緒に勉強したりビーチに行ったり、ボランティアしたりと忙しい日々を送っているみたい。私はというと先月から体調がよくなくて殆どお家にこもりっきり。リンゴ狩りもランチにも行けず、食料の買い出しと犬の散歩以外は殆どお家に。あまりにも外に出ないので奥さん二人がご飯を持ってきてくれたりと、本当に助かりました。ごちそうさまでした。そんな中、母親も心配して色々食べ物やお菓子を日本から送ってくれました。半月前にも一箱送ってもらったんだけど、先日また二箱届きました。その中にはデービスとクロのオモチャやお菓子も入っていたっけ。デービスもクロも喜んでいたよ。私も食料喜んだけどね。どうもありがとう。

Josh is at the halfway point at NCOA. On the weekends he is able to get away from studying for a little and get to the beach. This past weekend he and some classmates went to Panama City Beach to walk the beach, cleaning up trash on the way, then enjoy the water and sun. Beautiful beaches & sunsets. Takako has been taking care of our little boys at home. She just received a goodie package from Kabu-chan. Lots of stuff from Japan including some for Day-bis & Kuro. They sure are lucky!

TDY to NCOA

さて、ジョシュは現在、フロリダ州にいるんだよね。実は来年の昇進試験の為に１ヶ月半、学校に通わなきゃいけないらしく、先週オマハを出発しました。車で３日かけてフロリダ州まで行きました。アメリカは相変わらず広いよね。私は、デービスとクロとお留守番。早く帰ってきて欲しいものだわ。

We are sorry for not having updated our blog recently. As you may already know, Josh headed down to Florida for the NCO Academy this past week. Since he drove, he was able to see many cities on his travels. He headed down through part of Iowa towards Kansas City, over to St. Louis, through Illinois, Kentucky, Tennesse, and continued through Alabama only to arrive in Florida in a couple of days. Takako will be taking care of the little boys for the next, couple of weeks. We have been in daily communication all the while. Enjoy just a sampling of some photos from the journey.

Friends' Travels

今日、ヘイダン君とメメさんとプータン（犬）がシアトルに向けて出発しました。まだ実感が全くなくて来週あたりまた会えそうな感じがしちゃうんだけどね。月曜日からご飯まで作りにきてくれて、水曜日から今日まで我が家に泊まってくれたんだけど、時間過ぎるのが早かったっけ。出発の今日は、近所の奥さん達も何人か見送りにきてくれて、別れは本当に辛かった、でもまた会えるしね。知り合って半年ちょっとだったけど、夫婦共々、本当に仲良くしてくれて、本当にありがとうございました。ジョシュも私もデービスもクロも本当に楽しかったです。

This morning, Haydon, MeMe & Pooh-tan headed out for Olympia. Many friends stopped by our home to see them off. Last night, Haydon & Josh played Wii Sports one last time before the trip. He is now back to 'Pro' in bowling and is 'Pro' in Tennis. He has a Wii-mote with their Mii's attached so once they get a Wii, they can continue where they left off. We enjoyed having you stay with us and just hanging out. We miss you guys already and can't wait to see you in the near future. Day-bis continues to head to the guest bedroom to see if Uncle Haydon or Aunt MeMe are there. Have a safe trip to Olympia!

New life - Friends forever - Delicious food!

６日はジョシュのお誕生日でした。３４歳おめでとう。お誕生日パーティ開催といいたいところなんだけど、ヘイダン君＆メメさん達が来週、ネブラスカ州を離れるという事なので、近所の奥さん達と数ヶ月前から企画をねって６日に送別会を実行しました。ポットラック形式で、それぞれ持ち寄り料理なんだけど、今回もまた凄い料理ばかりだったよ。しかも美味しい。ごちそうさまでした。
翌日はメメさんの職場の送別会に行ってきました。これまたポットラック形式だったんだけど、今日のも美味しかった。ごちそうさまでした。

Just yesterday was Josh's birthday. His 34th! For his birthday we held a surprise going-away party for Haydon & MeMe at the Community Center on base. We surprised them with a potluck with many of the Japanese/American families in attendance. Thank you to everyone that made it a great time! Haydon & MeMe will being leaving Nebraska in a little less than a week, heading for the North-West Coast. We wish them our BEST in starting a new life all while still keeping in touch with everyone here and those of us whom have already left Nebraska. See you again, real soon!

Friends, Family, Fun & ESL Class

先週の始め、近所の奥様のお家で、カレーパーティをやりました。カレーは美味しいねぇ。ナンも買ってきてくれてて、久々にナンを食べました。ごちそうさまでした。また何とかパーティやりましょう。
先週末は、ミネソタからジョシュの妹夫婦が遊びにきてました。金曜日の夕方にきて日曜日の昼間には帰ってしまったんだけど、ベースに行ったり、近所を案内したり、近所の家族の皆と一緒にピザマシーン（アミューズメントパーク）に行ったりして、楽しい時間を過ごせました。
今週の月曜日からは私は、ESL（英語の学校）が始まりまたっけ。とりあえず今回は、１科目（文法）のクラスだけ行く事にしたんだよね。授業ではペアを組んでお互いのインタビューをしなきゃいけないんだけど、私が組んだ相手はアフリカの子だったのね、でも聞き取りが難しくてかなり悪戦苦闘だったっけ。でも、そのアフリカの子、授業が終わった後も私に話しかけてくれて、嬉しかったっけ。英語が曖昧な私は、あまり返答できなかったけどね。

Last week Takako attended a 'curry party' at a friend's home. She sure does love curry... They had naan also, it's been a while since she had it. Delicious. The ladies need to do it again, or at least invite the husbands;) Last Friday, Jill & Chris came down to visit from Minnesota for the weekend. We showed them what the base is like, relaxed some and introduced them to some of our friends down here in Bellevue. Saturday afternoon, the four of us met eight friends & family at The Amazing Pizza Machine for dinner, games and other amusement activities. We especially loved the go-karts. Thank you everyone for the wonderful time!

Just yesterday, Takako started her ESL class at Bellevue U. Since it was the first day, the teacher wanted to pair them up for easy conversation. Takako was paired with a young woman from Côte d'Ivoire or Ivory Coast, part of Africa. It is difficult for Takako to understand because of the accent. She will try her best in this class since the major focus is on English grammar.

August Adventures

ジョシュは１１日から１４日まで、オクラホマ州に出張に行ってました。数日間とはいえ、初めて一人でのお留守番。ちょっと不安もあったけど、毎日、メメさんが声かけてくれて、あっとゆうまに４日間過ぎました。映画を見に行ったり、買い物に行ったり、メメさんの仕事仲間と一緒にカジノのバイキングに行ったり、職場にもお邪魔させてもらったり、昼食、夕飯も、声かけてくれて、本当にありがとうございました＆ごちそうさまでした。
１１日から一週間、エアショーがあって、今日は最終日というこ事で、ヘイダン君＆メメ夫妻と一緒にエアショーを見に行ってきました。凄い暑かったっけ。私は、あまり飛行機には興味ないんだけど、間近で見ると迫力があって良かったっけ。ジョシュもヘイダン君も飛行機が好きみたいで、楽しそうだった。今週も一週間早かった。

Last Monday, Josh headed down to Tinker AFB in Oklahoma City for a workshop. He was able to take some photos of the Oklahoma City National Memorial. It was a sight to see. Since Josh was in Oklahoma, Takako tended to our little boys but this was her first time by herself at home in Bellevue. MeMe invited her along to a viewing of 'The Dark Knight' movie, shopping and the casino buffet with some co-workers. The following day, Takako went to see the pet grooming place that MeMe works at. Thank you again, MeMe for the quality time spent. Since the beginning of the Air Force Week, here in the heartland, many things have been going on in and around Omaha. Today we went with Haydon & MeMe to the air show on base. Takako & MeMe didn't really think much of an air show at first but were both glad they went. They had a great time looking at the static displays and watching the Air Force Thunderbirds perform. Josh & Haydon enjoyed everything about it. My how quickly another week has come to an end. But we had a good time!

Shampoo & Dinner

今日は月一回のデービスとクロのシャンプーの日という事でメメさんの所に行ってきました。クロは特にお風呂が大好きで、気持ち良さそうな顔してたっけ。今にも眠りそうだった。いつも洗ってもらった後に、首にバンダナを巻いてくれるんだけど、デービスは首の周りに襟巻き？があって、いつもバンダナがその襟巻きに隠れちゃうんだけど、今回は大きめのバンダナを巻いてもらったので、襟巻きにバンダナが隠れる事なく、かっこよく決まっていたっけ。シャンプーありがとうございました、シュークリームも美味しかったです。ごちそうさまでした。
その後、うちで夕飯とWiiスポーツ。今日も一日早かった。

Today, Day-bis & Kuro had baths over at MeMe & Haydon's. Kuro LOVES getting shampooed as he almost fell asleep too many times. It feels so good. Every time MeMe gives them baths, she ties a bandana around their neck however since Day-bis has a 'muffler/built-in scarf', it is difficult to see so today he got a larger one! MeMe even made some cream-puffs for us to snack on while the boys were getting shampooed. Thank you again MeMe! Afterwards, they came over to our place for dinner & a little Wii Sports for Haydon & Josh. Haydon got a new record in bowling! Before we knew it, the time was late and we need to get to bed.

Baking adventures, Pug Meet-ups & Air Force Week Opening Ceremony

メメさんからメメクッキーを教わりましたというより、作っている所を見る形だったので、とても分かりやすかったです。ありがとうございました。今度作りますわ。夕方頃、ジョシュもヘイダン君＆メメさんのお家にきて、皆で夕飯。また夕飯、御馳走になってしまいました。美味しかったですわ、鳥の煮込み。ありがとうございました。
土曜日は、オマハのパグ集会に行ってきました。デービスは今まで他の犬がいると透明犬みたく全く動かなかったのに、今日は自分から他の犬の所に行ってたっけ。ちょっとビックリ。クロも前より吠えなくなって、デービスもクロも成長してますわ。今日の集会は、テレビの撮影も兼ねてたんだけど、オマハにパグの集会がありますよって事の宣伝って感じで、特にインタビューとかもされなかった。
夕方からは、エアフォースの祭り？の開会式に行ってきました。横田でも友好祭があるようにアメリカでも同じ感じの祭りがあるんだよね。で、その開会式で、軍の人がパラシュートで降りてくるんだけど、何故か、すっごく感動しちゃって涙がでてきちゃったよ。

On Wednesday, Takako learned how to make MeMe's swirl cookies. Since she was there, kind of 'front-row seating', she realized how easy they are to make. Thanks MeMe! Josh met up with them later that night as the four of them had dinner. Once again, thank you. This morning, we attended our second Omaha Pug Club Meeting at the Bemis Center for Arts in downtown Omaha. They were filming a local children's television program and invited the Omaha Pug Club to come by and get some air-time. Day-bis & Kuro were very comfortable this meeting. Last meeting, Day-bis acted like he was invisible the whole time. Today he had no problems intermingling with the other pugs. Tonight we attended the Air Force Week "In the Heartland" opening ceremonies at Rosenblatt Stadium where they had aircraft flyovers, military demos on video and various live performances. Takako stated that she was a little choked up as the USAF Academy "Wings of Blue" Jump Team parachuted into right-center field. It was a sight to see. Josh enjoyed the B-2 flyover.

Summer Fun & Homemade bars

週末もいい天気に恵まれてというより凄く暑くてびっくりしたよ。土曜日は、朝から野菜市場に行ってきて、キャベツやピーマン、茄子、インゲン、デービスとクロのお菓子を購入。昼頃から車庫の掃除、暑かったけど、いい汗、流せました。
日曜日は更に日差しも強く、気温も高くて、ニュースで「午後は、エアコンのある部屋にいてください」って言ってたっけ。ニュースで言っていたのにも関わらず裏庭にプールをだして、デービスとクロは水遊び、ついでにジョシュも、太陽の日差しが肌にジリジリささるって感じで、痛かったよ。デービスもクロもジョシュも水遊び楽しんでいたっけ。で、私は、先日、ジョシュの実家に遊びに行った時に御馳走になったデザートをジョシュのお母さんにレシピを聞いて作ってみました。美味しく作れました。ちょっと甘いんだけどね。

Wow has it ever been great weather here in the heartland. Actually, it has been almost unbearable. Today we saw 101° as the high with humidity. Yesterday was cooler as we headed for the Farmer's Market downtown Omaha. We spent about $11 on cabbage x2, green peppers, green beans, eggplant and homemade dog treats. Returning home, we cleaned out the garage even though the heat was getting up there. We were losing a lot of water from sweat. Headed inside as the local news channels told us to "stay near the A/C this weekend". Now back to today, we purchased a small pool resort for Day-bis & Kuro. Splashed around for about 30 minutes only to head back inside due to the heat. Takako then wanted to try and make 'Salted Peanut Chews' we have eaten up in Minnesota. My mom made them so well that Takako wanted to make them also. Sure they have a lot of corn syrup, marshmallows and peanut butter chips in them but aren't really too sweet. Very delicious. Try them sometime.

Night Drive & August Dinner

夕方から二ヶ月前位に知り合いになった奥さんのお家に遊びに行ってきました。ポットラック会ですね。皆、持ちより一品って事で私は、トマトのサラダ？を持って行きました。奥さん以外の方は私、初対面だったんだけど緊張するかなって思ったけど、歳も近かったせいか緊張せずに楽しい時間を過ごせました。初めて一人で車で遠出したんだよね、といっても片道３０分くらいなんだけど、それでも私にとっては遠いんだよね。でも最近、運転にも随分慣れた感じかな。でも高速道路にはまだ乗れずだけどね。

Tonight, Takako went to a potluck where she met some new Japanese spouses. About five new faces. She knew one of them prior to this meeting, the host. It was very comfortable for her since they were all about the same age. Some have been here for years and some, just a couple of months. It was her first time driving, by herself for about 30 minutes one way. She feels more comfortable every time she drives now. She even came back after dark. (It wasn't busy on the side streets.) She doesn't want to try her hand at the interstate or highways yet.

今週末は、買い物に行ったり、お家でゴロゴロしたりして終了。もうすぐ８月だわ。隣に住んでいる奥さんに、お庭で育てているトマトを頂きました。早速、食べました。甘くて美味しかった。違う奥さんからはトマトの苗を頂きました。最近、やっと一つ赤い実になったっけ。食べごろかな。

It is yet another weekend here in Bellevue, NE. We went shopping, and just relaxing at home with the little boys. We can't believe that it is almost August. Our neighbor gave us some tomatoes from her backyard plants. Very good. Takako also received a tomato plant from one of her Japanese friends. It is amazing how fast they grow. One has already turned color. We can't wait until we can try them.

Shampoo, Market & Casino

今月もメメさんにデービスとクロのシャンプーをしてもらいました。デービスとクロ、いい匂いで毛並みも綺麗になりました。ありがとうございました。メメさんお手製のシュークリームも頂きました。おいしかった。ごちそうさまです。いつもすいません。
さて、夏の間だけ行われている野菜市場に行ってきました。沢山の野菜やハーブ、お花など売られてて、私達はキャベツとインゲン、デービスとクロのお菓子を買って帰宅。
夕方からはヘイダン君とメメさんとダンさんとカジノに行ってきました。あたり前だけど混んでたよ。で、カジノを３０分程遊ぶと隣にあるレストランのバイキング代がタダになるんだって、まぁカジノで負けちゃったら意味がないんだけどさ。で、結局、皆、マイナスになる事もなく良かった。でね、バイキング、色々な種類があったっけ、沢山食べたら、後半気持ち悪くなっちゃったよ。帰りはメメさんに胃薬をもらいました。ご迷惑おかけしました。カジノの写真は撮ってこなかった。室内はおそらく禁止だろうし、外で撮りたかったんだけど、帰りは既に私、気持ちが悪く。。。。後、ダンさんにお手製のサルサを頂きました。ありがとうございます。このサルサ、美味しいんだよね。野菜市場で、サルサ売っている人いたっけ、ダンさんも売ればいいのにって思っちゃうくらいダンさんのサルサ、美味しい。

This past week, MeMe gave Day-bis & Kuro another shampoo. Their hair feels so soft and smells so good afterwards. MeMe also made some cream-puffs with fruit & whipped cream filling. Delicious. This morning, we headed for the Farmer's Market downtown. There were many herbs, vegetables, flowers and many other miscellaneous items for sale. We purchased a large head of cabbage, green beans & homemade treats for Day-bis & Kuro. We just arrived home from Horseshoe casino over in Council Bluffs, IA. We just wanted to eat at the buffet but if we play some games (video slots) for 30 or more minutes, we'd receive a free buffet ticket. Haydon, MeMe, Dan, Takako & I walked out of there, stuffed! Everyone ended up winning a little bit of money too! One more thing, a big thanks to Dan for another container of 'Dan's Salsa'. You should sell it at the Farmers Market. You could make a fortune!

Minnesota trip

金曜日はiPhoneの発売日だったので、買いに行ってきました。お店が開店する１時間前に行ったんだけど既に４０人位が並んでいたっけ。それでも主要都市とかで買うのに比べたら少ない人数だし２時間程並んですんなり２つ買えました。買った後はジョシュの実家があるミネソタに向かいました。土曜日にジョシュの親戚の人の結婚披露宴があると言う事でね。相変わらず片道６時間は遠いっても私は行きも帰りも運転しないんだけどね。天気にも恵まれて、お買い物も出来たし家族とも楽しい時間を過ごせたりと、ただ木曜日の夜から私、体調を崩しちゃって体調万全じゃなかったのが残念だったけど。

This past Friday, we woke up early, went to a nearby AT&T store to get a pair of iPhone's (3G's). We arrived one hour early and were shocked that about 40 people were already in line waiting for the store to open at 8 am. (This is Nebraska, right?!?) Anyways, we finally got into the store and purchased two 8 GB iPhone's at about 9:30 am, the last two. After that we headed towards Minnesota to meet the family and attend Michael & Catherine's Wedding Reception the following day. We saw many relatives, some of whom that we haven't seen for close to 10 years! Takako kept stating that the distance is a long ways to travel (about 5-6 hours) but well worth the miles. She didn't drive, she was chauffeured. We had a great time, spending time with the family and shopping. The weather was perfect (everyday in the 70s-80s), however Takako had a sore throat the entire time. She is feeling much better now.

日本から帰ってきた翌日は、奥さん達と公園で持ち寄りランチ。奥さん達と一ヶ月ぶりの再会でしたが、皆さん元気そうで、食べ物もおいしそうで、しかもお子さん達、大きくなってたよ。子供の成長って早いのね。でもとにかく暑くてびっくり、日差しが痛かったもの。ジョシュもお仕事がお休みで、他の旦那さん達と色々話したりと楽しそうでした。翌日は２人の奥さんと近所の奥さんのお家に遊びに行ってきました。カレーうどん作ってくれて、おいしかった。楽しい時間すごせました。食べ物の話が続いてますが、今日はヘイダン君＆メメさんのお家にジョシュと夕飯を食べに行ってきました。すっごいお腹が一杯、沢山ごちそうになってしまいました。楽しい時間過ごせました。ごちそうさまでした。

Since Takako has gotten back from Japan, we have eaten many different types of food (in just three days)! Monday, we experienced another potluck at a park nearby. Everything looked delicious and tasted even better. It has only been one month but Takako was still shocked at how big everyone's kids are getting. On Tuesday, Takako met with a couple of her friends at Yako's home. She made 'curry-udon' (pictured in the center). Takako stated that it was very delicious! They had a great time socializing. As for tonight, we just arrived home from Haydon & MeMe's where we had a wonderful dinner. We love blogging about food as you can tell. It is always so good!

Back in OMAHA!

無事にアメリカに着きました。今回は、あわてることなく乗り継ぎも大丈夫でした。オマハに着いた途端、一気に現実というかなんというか、東京にいたのが夢みたいな感じで、まぁ、東京滞在中は仕事もしてなく、ただ、旅行に行ったり、遊びに行ったりとご気楽な生活だったから余計に短く感じたのかな、母親にはだいぶ迷惑かけてしまったけどね。
で、ジョシュが空港まで迎えにきてくれたんだけど、何故がバラの花束を持ってて、普段だったらロマンティックだなって思うんだけど、長時間のフライトもあって心身共に疲れ気味で、感動というか、なんというか、、、、とにかく東京からアメリカまでは遠い。

Takako just arrived back home from her trip to Japan. She was worrying about the transfer from international to domestic in Detroit but went through with no problems. Once she got off the plane, it all kind of seemed like a dream, (Did she really go to Japan?) She has already said that it went by very quickly and would have loved to stay longer. At the airport, Josh greeted her with a dozen, red roses (hopefully romantic) but she was tired of lugging around 2 carry-ons, not to mention her 2 checked bags...and the roses weren't light. Josh stated that next time, he will keep the roses in the car on the front seat so she can set everything down, then pick them up as she puts on her seat belt.

月曜日に引き続き、サチと遊びに行きました。蒸し暑かったけど、沢山話したり飲んだりと楽しい時間を過ごしました。また来年、日本に里帰りできるといいなって思ってます。今回、会えなかった方々、来年は会いましょう。

Takako met Sachi this past Monday and Friday. They talked a lot over food & drinks. They had a great time together but there wasn't enough time on this visit to Tokyo to hang out more. She wasn't able to meet all of her friends. If she will travel back to Japan next year, she would like to meet many more friends.

It's... A New Car

ジョシュも犬達も無事に実家のミネソタから帰ってきました。さて私の日本滞在も残す所、あと少しですが、実は、車をもう１台買いました。私が８月から学校に行き始めるのと今後の事も考えてもう１台車が必要って事で、それが昨日、我が家に届きました。ジョシュが今、乗っている車はハイブリット車で凄く静かで乗り心地がよかったのとガソリン代もあまりかからないから、２台目もハイブリット車（トヨタのプリウス）にしようと思っていたんだけど、ガソリン代の高騰が影響していて、新車は半年以上待ち、中古車でも新車以上の値段になってたりで、色々悩んだ結果、日産バァーサ（日本だとティーダ）にしました。小さい車なのでガソリン代もあまりかからないのと駐車する時に小型車だからアタフタせずにできるかなぁって思ってね。本当は大きな車が好きなんだけど、ジョシュの車で何度、アタフタした事か、、運転って難しいわよね。日産までジョシュと一緒に車取りに行ってくれてありがとう、メメさん。

Yesterday, Josh & our little boys arrived back home from Minnesota. Takako has a couple more days left on her vacation to Japan and then she is headed home. In the coming months, they will need another vehicle so that Takako can commute back and forth to ESL that she will be taking at Bellevue U. It always is nice with another vehicle, just in case. We have been looking for another Hybrid since we already have one as we took an interest in a Toyota Prius. It gets GREAT gas mileage and is whisper quiet. We have called many places in the US to reserve a Prius but there are 6 month waiting times for them since the price of gas is up, everyone else has the same idea. Isn't that funny how that happens? Instead, we purchased a 2008 Nissan Versa (Tiida in Japan). It is a small, four door, hatchback but should be a great 'starter' car for Takako. Especially the parking. Takako is sometimes hesitant about parking the Highlander due to its size. She did a great job at picking out the exact Versa that she wanted even down to the color of the floor mats! A special thanks to MeMe for helping me pick it up yesterday.

Gyu-Kaku Again

皆で牛角に行ってきました。やはりお肉は美味しいね。というより、焼き肉は美味しいよね。アメリカに牛角のお店があればいいのにと改めて思ってしまったわ。半年ぶりに皆にも会えたので楽しかったわ。牛角の後は、二次会へ。終電で帰るつもりがそのまま三次会に流れ、で、いつものコースで結局朝まで遊んでました。まぁ、また当分会えないしね。また牛角食べに行きましょうねぇ。

Just the other night, Takako ate at Gyu-Kaku with friends. (Josh is jealous.) The beef was so delicious! She (Josh also) would love for Gyu-Kaku to open a chain of restaurants in the USA (especially Omaha now that we are here). She met many friends that she hasn't seen in over 6 months. They then went to a 2nd party and finally a 3rd at different places. Overall, they enjoyed time together, great food and conversations throughout the night. She thoroughly enjoyed her time. She hopes to see them all again soon!

Surprise BBQ

今週末はジョシュのお姉ちゃんの誕生日ということで、バーベキューという名のサプライズ誕生日会を開きました。お姉ちゃんは既に４人、子供がいるんだけど、４人も出産したとは思えない若さなんだよね。デービスもクロも弟夫婦が飼っているスターバックとも仲良しで楽しい時間を過ごせたようです。お誕生日おめでとう、Jen!

This week has been kind of busy with shopping, enjoying time with friends and family and sleeping in for as long as Day-bis & Kuro let me. Last night, the whole crew, including Wayne & Shari met at Jared & Mary's for a BBQ and a 'surprise' Birthday Party for Jen, my older sister. Day-bis & Kuro had a great time too with Kuro teasing Starbuck. It is amazing how fast the nieces and nephew grow. Happy Birthday, Jen!

Adventures & Memories

ジョシュはミネソタ州でも行われているパグミィーテイングに行ってきました。デービスは、他のパグと戯れる事なく殆どジョシュのお父さんの周りにいたらしい。今までもドッグランに行ってもあまり他の犬と戯れる事もなく、マイペースで神経質なデービスだから仕方ないけどもう少し他の犬と戯れてほしいものだわ。その後は、妹夫婦のお家で夕食。
私は、母親と一緒に三重県にある伊勢神宮（外宮と内宮）にお参りに行ってきました。英虞湾にあるホテルに一泊、素敵なホテルだったっけ。翌日は鳥羽から出てる伊勢湾フェリーに乗ったりと色々観光して、帰宅。伊勢神宮は前々から一度は行ってみたかった場所だっただけにいい思い出になりました。母親よ、ありがとうね。

This past Sunday Josh, the little boys, Wes & Vicky attended a Minneapolis/St. Paul Pug meeting. Day-bis started out fine, interacting with the other Pugs but always came back to Grandpa Wes. Kuro had no problem interacting with the other dogs but we hope that Day-bis will open up a little more. He generally does things at his own pace. After the Pug meeting, we drove over to Jill & Chris's for dinner. Day-bis & Kuro enjoy their home since they have carpet on the low stairs (easy climbing).

Takako & Hideko went on a two day trip to the Mie prefecture in central Japan (near Nagoya). They visited many places such as Ise Shrine, stayed in the Ago Bay hotel and rode the Ise-wan Ferry. They both had a great time together! They always look forward to memory making trips.

Meeting with family & friends

さてジョシュは無事に実家のあるミネソタに到着しました。出発前夜は、ヘイダン君＆メメさんのお家で夕飯をごちそうなり、楽しい時間を過ごしたようです。ヘイダン君＆メメさん、毎回、ありがとうございます。ミネソタの実家には約１０日程滞在する予定で、デービスも黒も楽しい時間を過ごす事でしょう。
えっと私は、東京にきてから色々自分の身の回りの事で忙しくて、やっと金曜日にサチとタクちゃんとサムとクニエに会えました。半年ぶりの再会だったけどメールなどで連絡とっていたせいか、久しぶりって気がしなかったのよね。楽しい時間過ごせました、ありがとうね。

Josh arrived in Minnesota safely in about 5 1/2 hours. Just this past Thursday night, he ate dinner at Haydon & MeMe's house. Very good as usual. Thank you again! He will be in Minnesota for the next 10 days visiting family & friends. Day-bis & Kuro are also going to have a great time with relatives both human & pets. As for Takako, since arriving in Tokyo she hasn't been able to meet up with friends until Friday night. She met: Sachi, Taku-chan, Sam & Kunie. She had a great time and as with Hideko, didn't seem like many months have passed since they are still able to stay in touch via email. Stay tuned for more posts!

Tokyo trip (so far) & Omaha Adventures

無事に日本に着きました。国内線と国際線の乗り換え時間の短いフライトを今回選んだのね、毎回、乗り換えする空港で何時間も待つの嫌だったし、でも今回に限って天候の影響で国内線の離陸が大幅に遅れてしまって、国際線への乗り継ぎ時間が３０分あるかないかで、乗り換えのデトロイト空港で、思いっきり走っちゃったよ。乗れなかったらシャレにならないしね。結局、ギリギリ乗れて一安心。飛行機も全く揺れず良かった。成田で半年ぶりに母親とご対面だったんだけど、ほぼ週一回のペースでパソコンでビデオチャットしていたせいか、あまり久しぶりって感じがしなかった。
週末は、母親と一緒に、長野方面にサクランボ狩りと温泉バスツアーに行ってきました。久々の温泉、気持ちよかった。
ジョシュはヘイダン君＆メメさん夫妻と夕食＆Wiiスポーツで楽しんだみたいで、日曜日は、メメさんにデービスと黒のシャンプーをしてもらいました。いつもありがとうございます。

Takako arrived in Tokyo, safe & sound. When she had chosen the flights online, she didn't want to spend a lot of time in Detroit to change from domestic to the international flight. The flight from Omaha was a little late getting into Detroit as she only had about 30 minutes to change planes. She made the changeover. She said there was minimal turbulence throughout the flights. Once meeting Kabuchan at Narita, they realized that it hasn't really been a long-time-no-see moment due to the weekly video chats. The have already gone to Minakami Onsen together and have already made plans for more trips during her stay.

Back in Omaha, Haydon & MeMe came over Saturday afternoon, picked Josh up as they headed for Fatburger. They got their order to go and headed back to our place for dinner and later some Wii Sports. Four hours later, Haydon achieved 'Pro' level in bowling. Fun times were had by all. The next day, Josh brought Day-bis & Kuro over to Haydon & MeMe's for Pug-shampoo-time. They were both very good as we also ate udon for lunch.

2 Year Anniversary!

今日は結婚記念日でした。早いもので２年。ジョシュはお仕事を休んでくれたんだけど、特にでかける事もなくお家でビデオみたりとリラックス、いつもとかわらない感じでした。でね、久々にカニと伊勢エビを茹でて食べました。茹でた後って案外、身がなくなるものね。ちょっと損した気分だわ。
そうそうMac社からやっとiPhone（3G）が来月発売ですわ。こっちにきて携帯を買おうと思いつつ、ジョシュが「もうすぐiPhoneの3Gが出るから待とう」と言われ、いつになったら発売なのかなって思っていたら、来月発売だって、日本も同時発売みたいだね。とりあえず、買う予定なんだけどね。
って事で、ジョシュから結婚記念日のお祝いで、明日から私だけ一ヶ月ばかり日本に里帰りしますわ。ブヒ。ジョシュはデービスとクロとお留守番ってもジョシュも来週末からデービスとクロを連れて実家のミネソタに帰る予定ですわ。

Today was our 2 year anniversary! It is amazing how fast 2 years goes. We just relaxed and enjoyed eating boiled king crab legs & lobster tail at home. Accompanied with handmade sushi rolls.

In other news, the iPhone 3G was just announced at the WWDC. We have been planning on getting a cell phone here in the states but have been waiting for the 3G iPhone. We hope to purchase two of them next month.

We know that the 2 year anniversary is cotton, however for my gift to my wife is a roundtrip ticket to Tokyo, Japan to visit family & friends. She will be leaving tomorrow and while she is there, Josh will head up to Minnesota to visit family with Day-bis & Kuro. It should be a nice Summer Trip for both of us.
